"The process of sorting involves grouping objects or pictures according to one or more attributes" (Irons, 1999, p.28).
"Sorting involves grouping items on the basis of one or more attributes and provides an opportunity for children to analyze the attributes of an object" (Yelland, Butler & Diezmann, 1999, p.11).
For examples:
Sorting the blocks according to their colours |
Sorting the blocks according to their shapes |
Ideally, children have the opportunity to choose their own attributes during the sorting activities. Then, the teacher should encourage the children to talk about the reason why they sort the objects into some particular attributes (Iron, 1999). This activity helps the students to develop their creativity and thinking skills.
